A Little Bit of (Modern) Art History

Update December 2015 – looks like the pictures on this post have messed up. Sorry 🙁

A Note of Caution: Given the content matter, use discretion when speaking about the contents of this post. There is a reason why the hovse blog is a password-protected site.

This is a compendium of modern tunnel art. It consists of murals and larger works of text that have been put up since the fall of 2011.

Why 2011? Well, first and foremost, because a definition of “modern” needs to start somewhere. And everything before the fall of 2011 is before my time, so therefore I am defining everything post that point to be modern.

Secondly, Fall 2011 was notable because it was the start of Dean Kiewiet’s second reign.

Between PNGs, new policies, and paranoia, there was not much trust between the students and the administration. Because of the uncertainty of what would happen if even a small mistake were to occur, the self-imposed policy of many in the hovse — including of that year’s Troll — was a ban.

However, despite what pressures there may have been, life still moved on. There were still sets, people still gossiped and joked. And, even with our self-imposed ban, people still explored.

Pieces are grouped by creator when known and by subject when not. The listing here is (to my knowledge) complete through May 2014 unless otherwise noted.

Known Missing – Art in the Shadowlands, The Periscope of the Fleming Cannon, piece by Tem Jackson near Baxter, piece by Grace near Braun, Kiwi-related graffiti in Geo tunnels, graffiti next to the tribute to love (by Robinson)
